Fiona, ongoing

In September 2022 a record breaking storm, Hurricane Fiona, pummeled the small Canadian Province of Nova Scotia. It was a lifetime event where previously unknown windspeeds reached 179km/hr on the North Shore. This destructive storm hit overnight on September 24th, coming out of the open Atlantic after forming in early September. Fiona came ashore on the Canso Peninsula of Nova Scotia with winds reaching 170km/hr. To the East the average wave size was measured at 40ft with peak waves at almost 100ft. The damage was extensive, with power outages in some areas lasting for two weeks. Homes and farms were destroyed, coastal cottages lifted from their foundations after a massive storm surge and huge swaths of forest laid flat. Overnight Fiona moved North to Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland again causing extensive damage.

Mark begin photographing the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona on the morning of September 25th and continues to make work depicting the storms impact and legacy on the landscape.
