Other Ordinary Places

Unpublished

This body of work comes out of several years roaming the rural areas of Nova Scotia, a small province on Canada's Atlantic Coast. The work is a study of the seemingly mundane or ordinary places and landscapes each of us encounters daily.

We tend to seek so called 'extraordinary experiences' as an attempt to dwell in a kind of escapism that pulls us from the mundane experience of life for a brief moment. What though are the tangible experiences that are able to cut though the monotony and become a part of our lived experience that takes a place in our memory as something of value?

While making this work I had one rule and that was to move at about 60km/hr and let the photographs come to me. It was interesting to watch the brain categorize moments in time as ordinary, but being able to disconnect from this I was able to step out of the mundane and find moments or places that began to hold a measure of the extraordinary, these photographs are those brief moments.
